Back in March 2011, Lowercroft were the first of our main feeder primary schools to accept our invitation to enable their junior pupils (Years 5 & 6) to volunteer in the ‘Art to Heart’ scheme. Since then, the following primary schools have also been involved – Elton, Greenhill, Christchurch Ainsworth and St. Stephen’s. 12 pupls from each school are selected over the course of 4 weeks based on their enthusiasm, behaviour and artistic ability demonstrated throughout ‘art projects’ delivered by Miss Long as part of her ‘Community Arts Manager’ role. The primary school children visit ‘Burrswood House’ – a ‘BUPA’ care home to faciltate a range of art and craft activities for older people who live there. This has enhanced the community links which each of our main feedr primary schools has with their local community. Watch this space for photos and comments…

In November 2011, our provision was extended to 4 venues providing care for older people in our local community – Epworth Grange, Cameron House, Abbeydale R.C.H & Walshaw Hall! The funding has paid for additonal memebers of staff to not only faciltate art & craft sessions but ‘Maths Games’ linking with our recently acquired second specialism in ‘Maths and Computing’. The feedback we have received to date has been extremely encouraging and proves that Art to Heart is still a vital component of our school’s Community Provision. The funding has provided, for the first time, opportunities for our Year 9 pupils to be volunteers! Year 8 are currently volunteering and following the half term break, Year 7, for the first time, will be given the opportunity to be Maths Games volunteers. In the latter half of the Summer Term, the most ‘outstanding’ pupils from across these Year groups will be given another volunteering opportunity and the ‘cream of the crop’ will be rewarded at our Annual Gold Awards Ceremony in July! The older participants will be rewarded with trophies, certifictates and will be given the chance to see their artwork displayed in a special exhibition as part of our school’s annual ‘Arts Week’ in July. A full update, comments and photographs will be posted on the website in July – watch this space!

Students studying on the Creative & Media Diploma at Elton High recently organised and curated a community art exhibition at the purpose built Creative Media Centre on the school site. Year 7 Elton High pupils and Year 5 pupils from Lowercroft Primary School assisted participants to produce nostalgic paper garments decorated with black and white pictures from the 1930s-1950s and emblazened with text describing the participants’ memories of those eras or aspects of their own life stories.
The garments were hung on a miniature washing line with gold pegs for the special exhibition preview which took place on Saturday 5th March 2011.

Year 5 pupils from Lowercroft Primary School have been the first primary children ever to volunteer in the Art to Heart scheme. As a main feeder primary school to Elton High, they welcomed the opportunity with open arms.
3 children were selected each week based on their behaviour, manners, and effort during a recent 5 week art project led by Miss Long. The Children’s ethusiasm was infectious and they proved themselves to be wonderful volunteers and certainly helped to put smiles on the faces of participants at Burrswood House in Bury!

Elizabeth House

Over the past few months we at Elizabeth House have been lucky enough to have had the children and Miss Burns visit the residents every week to assist with craft activities. Residents, their families and staff have found the whole experience very rewarding.

The different children from the school have been very consciencious towards the residents. They have been pleasant and communicative which I credit to Miss Burns.

We are looking forward to it beginning again – Thanks very much. Regards,

Lynn Parsons
Proprietor Elizabeth House

Elizabeth House is a small homely residential care home in Elton, Bury. It has space for 18 people over the age of 65years.They all live at the home because they can no longer cope or manage to live with family or alone due to their ageing illness.

We do our best to create a warm happy atmosphere at the home to try and make it a home from home feel so that people are able to settle into a different lifestyle more comfortably. Friends and family are encouraged to visit any time they wish to continue their support of their family member.
